SC 138’s Field Study 2 moved to Bulgaria on the second day of this two-week virtual journey. The session focused on Bulgaria’s Foreign and Defence Policy, as well as providing Course Members with an overview of the nation’s Armed Forces and their responsibilities abroad.
The NDC’s Commandant, LGEN Olivier Rittimann, opened the session with welcome remarks, and was followed by the Bulgarian Deputy Chief of Defence LGEN Dimitar Iliev’s welcome address. A presentation on ‘The National Security System in Crisis Escalation’ was provided by Mr. Georgi Krastev, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Security Council. Mr. Georgi Panayotov, Ambassador-at-large with the Security Policy Directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, briefed on Foreign Policy Priorities and the first part of the session ended with a briefing on Defence Policy by BGEN Radostin Iliev, Director of Defence Policy and Planning. The second half of the session began with a presentation from COL Georgi Georgiev, Deputy Director of the Strategic Planning Directorate in the Ministry of Defence, who provided an insightful overview of the Bulgarian Armed Forces. Last, a stimulating lecture on Crisis Management and the Disaster Response Centre of Excellence was delivered by COL Orlin Nikolov, CMDR COE Director.
