Under the auspices of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC), the 2013 Military Conference on Issues of Mutual Interest was held at the NATO Defense College (NDC) on 26-28 November.
NDC Commandant LtGen Arne Bård Dalhaug (NOR A) and NDC Dean Dr Daria Daniels Škodnik (SVN C) welcomed the Russian delegation, which was led by GSMA Deputy Commandant MajGen Chvarkov (RUS A). The members of the delegation were: MajGen Vladimir Leonodovich Suvorov (RUS A), Deputy Chief of the Staff Management & National Security Department; Col Alexander Petrovich Martoflyak (RUS A), Associate Professor in the Military Strategy Department; Col Alexander Gerontievich Likhonosov (RUS A), Associate Professor; and Col Alexander Vasilievich Nayda (RUS A), Senior Instructor in the Military Management Department.
Following the introductory remarks by the NDC Commandant and the Head of the Russian Delegation, academic proceedings were opened by the NDC Director of Academic Planning and Policy (DAAP), BrigGen Gerd Bischof (DEU F). The session was moderated by Ms Heidi Reisinger (DEU C), of the NDC Research Division.
The Conference was a unique opportunity for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the main features of Russia’s geopolitical and strategic interests, Russian military policy and military defence doctrine, and the directions in which these issues are developing. The five lecture topics generated lively and fruitful discussions, benefitting from the significant contribution made by RAdm Geir Osen (NOR N), the Head of the NATO Military Liaison Mission in Moscow. In addition, a number of NDC Course Members currently attending Senior Course 123 engaged with the Russian delegation during the discussion periods.
