On Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th May, the NATO Defense College organized a 2-day seminar on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region: the aim was to give Senior Course 132 a strategic overview of major politico-military and security-related issues.
On the first day, the analysis focused on the main causes of the present instability in the MENA region, and in key countries in particular, while also examining future prospects for regional security and stability. In addition, detailed consideration was given to how NATO and the EU might best contribute in this respect, and what forms of cooperation could be envisaged.
On the second day, participants worked in small groups for detailed discussion of specific topics. Mentored by five subject matter experts, the groups were encouraged to offer practical viewpoints based on participants’ knowledge, experience and research.
