
On Thursday 30 April 2015, the NATO Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC) was honoured to host, at H10 Hotel in Rome, Admiral Mario Rino ME (ITA N) and three members of Ce. S. I. – Centre for International Studies: Centre Director Professor Andrea Margelletti, Dr Gabriele Iacovino and Dr Marco Di Liddo.
Upon arrival, Admiral Mario Rino ME and the three members of the Centre were warmly welcomed by NDC Middle East Faculty Director Colonel Giuseppe Morabito (ITA A), who updated him on College activities and the ongoing thirteenth NATO Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC-13).
Admiral Mario Rino ME’s lecture, entitled “The 5+5 DEFENSE INITIATIVE: Flexible multilateralism in the Wider Mediterranean”, focused on some background on the genesis of cooperation: geography-geopolitics, strengths and weaknesses, fault lines. He explained the essence of cooperation, the 5+5 principles, content & dynamics; some remarks on current situation in the Mediterranean and conclusions.
The subsequent Q&A session provided an opportunity for discussion and dialogue.
Late in the same morning, the three members of the Centre for International Studies gave a lecture about the strategy and the Italian perception in the definition of the Mediterranean security situation. They underlined the Libyan outlook and its perspectives of development and focused on the insecurity in the Sahel-Saharan area as well.
