Foresight is intended to inform and illuminate the future.

But what if instead it serves to build conceptual blinkers regarding the nature of future conflicts? This paper presents a quantitative and qualitative study of close to 100 foresight reports recently produced by NATO, its members and partners. These are placed in perspective alongside studies from adversarial countries, as well as narratives drawn from institutional science fiction.

Nicolas Minvielle holds a PhD in Economics from EHESS. As a graduate of IEP Strasbourg and Kyushu University in Japan, he began his career as Brand Director for Philippe Starck, before becoming Head of the Specialized Master’s course in Marketing, Design and Creation at Audencia Business School.

Marie Roussie. As a young researcher on the use of fiction in innovation, specializing in military topics after working on the Red Team Défense, Marie has spent the past three years methodically examining the approaches to the future developed by the French armed forces.

Romane Thomas. As a Master’s student in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, Romane was introduced to foresight as an analyst at Alt-A and through various projects carried out with the French Ministry of Armed Forces. ↩︎
