On Friday 4th April 2014, the NATO Defense College had the privilege of hosting an Australian delegation, composed of: the Australian Ambassador to NATO and the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg, H.E. Duncan Lewis (AUS C); the Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Rome, Mr Douglas Robert Trappet (AUS C); and the Australian Military Representative to NATO and the EU, and Military Attaché to the Kingdom of Belgium, Rear Admiral Allan duToit (AUS N). The delegation was joined by another distinguished guest, the Commander of the Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway, MajGen Erhard Buehler (DEU A).
The aim of the visit was for the group to receive a detailed briefing on the activities and objectives of the NATO Defense College. In conjunction with the visit, Ambassador Lewis also delivered a Duncan Lewis is a former Secretary of the Australian Department of Defence. He was also Associate Secretary of the National Security Division, within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Before taking up his current position, he served as Australia’s inaugural National Security Advisor. Prior to joining the Australian Public Service, he had an exceptional military career, in which he gained both operational and strategic-level experience. He commanded at all levels, serving in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as with the UN in Lebanon and East Timor. He was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005, for his services as the inaugural Special Operations Commander Australia. He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in 1993, and the Distinguished Service Cross in 2001.
