Current events in the Middle East once more highlight the importance of stable security institutions in weak states. NATO’s contribution to the reconstruction of the Iraqi military thus has to be understood as not confined to training alone, but as a major input in the democratic transition and stabilization of Iraq.
In this Research Paper, Florence Gaub analyzes the efforts the Alliance has made in its assistance to Iraq, examining achievements so far and the challenges ahead. It becomes clear that Security Force Assistance in post-conflict countries will very likely increase in NATO’s portfolio – the Alliance should thus take the opportunity to learn from its current experiences.
