What strategic lessons can we learn from NATO’s Libya operation? While tactical insights emerged rather quickly during and after the mission, strategic and therefore more important lessons are identified in a new NATO Defense College Research Report by Florence Gaub. She demonstrates that, although the operation can be considered a success from a number of perspectives, this should not cloud our vision regarding six important points – among them the need to put the use of air power in an appropriate perspective, the importance of cultural advisers, and the role of strategic communication. If the experience of Operation Unified Protector is ultimately to offer lasting benefits, these lessons must point the way for future thinking.
