NATO enlargement seemed for a long time to have been placed on the back burner, with NATO reaffirming that the door for new members will remain open but not specifying a definite date on which the next applicant country will be able to march through this door. However, a new debate has recently started within the Alliance on whether or not to speed up the enlargement process. Such a discussion contains considerable potential for friction: one of the applicant states is Georgia, a country which is still partly occupied by Russian forces as a result of the 2008 war. The new paper by the NDC Research Division analyses the pros and cons of rapid Georgian NATO membership, and offers proposals as to how NATO could proceed.
