Having suffered a lot of criticism since its inception, the NATO Response Force (NRF) has evolved. Conceived as a rapid military response option for use in emerging crises all over the world, in actual practice it has been used only in non-combat operations. But that may not be the real crux of the matter: with NATO at a turning point after a decade of non-stop operations, the NRF has an essential role to play as a catalyst to transformation and in maintaining the high level of interoperability achieved in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya.
