Dear Reader,
Recent developments in Italy have put a new perspective on the widespread perception of Italy being less exposed to the jihadi threat than other major European states. Like its neighbours, Italy has now also become a target for international and home-grown jihadi terrorist activities. This paper, jointly authored by one of our in-house experts and a bright young research intern we hosted last summer, analyses the history and current state of the jihadist threat in Italy, evaluates how the country features in international jihadi narratives, and describes the counter-measures taken by Italian authorities.
