SC132 continued the FS2 Programme in Brussels, and after visiting NATO HQ and the EU Military Staff on Wednesday 9 May, Course Members visited SHAPE in Mons in the morning. General Sir James EVERARD, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) welcomed the group, giving a general presentation on NATO’s past, present and possible future policies and priorities.
Afterwards, Course Members heard a briefing on SACEUR’s priorities and NATO’s current operations by Brigadier Jasper de QUINCEY ADAMS, Director of the Comprehensive Crisis and Operations Management Centre (CCOMC). Major General Alfredo SANZ, Deputy Chief of Staff Resources (DCOS RES) and Lieutenant General Huguesn DELORT LAVAL, SHAPE Vice Chief of Staff (VCOS) closed the morning session after the Q&A. In the afternoon SC132 returned to Brussels, to the Belgian Ministryof Defence, where they were briefed by Ambassador MICHIELSEN, Director of Security Policy in the Federal Foreign Affairs Service, on Belgian Foreign and Security Policy 2018. The main current security challenges were presented, highlighting the importance of a multinational approach for Belgium.
Lieutenant Colonel Gertrude SCHOUWAERTS from the Staff Department for Strategic Affairs, continued with a presentation on Belgian Defence Policy, in which the strategic missions of the Belgian Armed Forces were analysed, in view of the new security environment and global challenges.
The visit to Brussels ended with Col. Ludo DUFOUR, Belgian Faculty Advisor at the NDC in Rome moderating the third and final session with Capt.Hans HUYGENS, Head of Defence Policy Division of ACOS Strategy and International Relations at the Belgian Ministry of Defence illustrating the objectives, principles and cooperation programmes of BENELUX Defence Cooperation.
