On 23 March 2021, Innovation Week continued its 4-day journey with a new set of lectures, allowing Course Members to dive into the NATO and European institutions’ approaches to innovation and understand how members states’ efforts are leveraged.
NDC Dean, Dr. Stephen J. Mariano, moderated the session by summarizing the main topics covered on Day 2 of Innovation Week. A presentation of Dr. Antonio Missiroli, NATO’s former Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges and current Associate Fellow at the NDC, focused on the challenges and opportunities that innovation faces in relation to security and defense. The second half was introduced by Maxime Roclore, Chief Executive’s Policy Office at the European Defense Agency (EDA), who provided a broad overview on the Agency and its role. Dr. Panagiotis Kikiras, Head of the Innovative Research Unit, explained how the EDA promotes innovation and shared some of their best practices. Lastly, Wolfgang Roehrig, the EDA’s Head of Unit for Information Security, gave a lecture on cybersecurity. Building on Day 1’s “Introduction to Innovation,” Day 2 provided knowledge and insight to set the stage for Day 3 discussions on the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and the Joint European Disruptive Initiative (JEDI).
