
On 14 March 2022, the NATO Defense College (NDC) hosted the first day of Senior Course 140’s Field Study 1 (FS1), Italian Day. Course Members were addressed by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Italian Chief of Defence, and heard a number of presentations on Italian Foreign, Defence and Security Policy, by speakers from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior.
The day started with an office call between Lieutenant General Olivier Rittimann, Commandant of the NDC, and Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Italian Chief of Defence. Admiral Cavo Dragone gave a speech in which he highlighted the role of the NATO Defense College over the years, in providing “first class training while facilitating the consolidation of a network of interpersonal relations among members of the Alliance and partner nations.”
The first presentation, on “NATO: current adaptation and Italian priorities,” was delivered by Counselor Alessandro Cattaneo, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was followed by Dr Arturo Varriale, from the Ministry of the Interior who spoke about the “Challenges of Contemporary Terrorism: The Italian Experience.”
The next session on “Elements and strategic perspective of the Italian Defence Policy” was presented by Captain Daniele Paolo Maria Martinuzzi, from the Ministry of Defence. Colonel Enrico Marinelli, from the Italian Joint Operational Command, gave the last presentation of the day focusing on “National Commitments in the actual strategic context”.
