From 20 to 22 May 2024, Senior Course 144 participated in the China Seminar, delving into China’s political, military, and economic ambitions, and reflecting on its policies and challenges.
Held over three days, the first part of the Seminar was devoted to lectures delivered by guest speakers, followed by a Q&A session in a panel format. The panel featured Dr Ashley Tellis (USA), BGEN (Ret.) David R. Stilwell (USA), Dr James Boutilier (CAN), Ms Meia Nouwens (NLD), and Ms Shihoko Goto (JPN). Providing Course Members with insights on Chinese domestic, foreign and security policy agenda, the lectures were followed by in-depth deliberations within Committees.
Supported by mentors, each Committee reflected on China’s ambitions and strategies, discussing their impact on global security and implications for NATO. The Seminar enabled discussions about China’s relations with its close partners such as Iran, North Korea, and Russia, specifically in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as its policy towards the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Course Members also addressed China’s national security doctrine and its military capability, evaluating the Chinese ambitions around the globe. Furthermore, they considered the state of the Chinese economy in relations to the country’s economic ambitions and partnerships, assessing risks and opportunities that it presents.
On day three of the Seminar, the Committees had the opportunity to present their findings before all Course Members, enabling further discussions on the challenges and prospects of NATO-China relations.
