On Monday 26 September 2011, SC119 Course Members (CMs) and the staff delegation led by NDC Commandant, Lieutenant General Arne Bård Dalhaug, departed on the first of the three Field Studies of the Course. The Field Studies (FS) are an integral part of the Senior Course curriculum, and provide an opportunity for CMs to gain hands-on experience of national political and security issues in the various capital cities of the NATO community.
This FS will focus on “European Security Perspectives”, as the group will spend the next ten days visiting Ljubljana, Vienna, Budapest, Bern, Berlin, and London, before returning to the NATO Defense College in Rome.
During this time, CMs will be given the opportunity to visit the Parliaments, and official government and military institutions, as well as to participate in lectures and discussions on the security and defence policies of several NATO countries.
CMs will be briefed by senior government officials and senior military personnel on the organization of the armed forces and their transformation processes. During the FS, CMs will have an overview of the working methods and policies in each country, as well as of how individual NATO countries will face the new security challenges of the 21st Century.
