Senior Course 144 visited Berlin, Germany to gain firsthand insights into the nation’s defence and security stance directly from the Ministry of Defense.
This was the fourth stop of Senior Course’s Field Study 2 programme, designed to deepen understanding of European Allies’ defence perspectives through direct engagement with leading practitioners.
At the Federal Ministry of Defence, Course Members engaged in discussions with Major General Stefan Schulz, Deputy Director-General and Brigadier General Maik Keller, Chief of Division from the Security and Defence Policy Directorate. These discussions offered insights into Germany’s adept adaptation to the shifting security landscape.
From bolstering defence capabilities to an unwavering commitment to the Alliance, the briefings covered Germany’s strategic priorities in security and defence policies. The talks underscored Germany’s steadfast dedication to supporting stability in Europe’s neighborhoods and upholding the rules-based international order.
Additionally, they discussed the involvement of German armed forces in international crisis management and national and collective defence with Rear Admiral Christian Bock. The group also delved into the global ramifications of contemporary security challenges and corresponding national security policies with Professor Carlo Masala.
These engagements provided a comprehensive panorama of Germany’s strategic direction to enhance national and collective defence, empowering Course Members with invaluable insights into the defence and security dynamics of a founding NATO Ally, and the nation’s pivotal role in safeguarding collective security
The visit also included a walk to the Bundeswehr Memorial, where Lieutenant-General Max A. L. T. Nielsen, the NDC Commandant, participated in a wreath-laying ceremony. He was joined by the President of Senior Course 144 and the German Protocol and Liaison Officer. This gesture honoured the sacrifices of the past while underscoring the ongoing commitment to defence and security.
