On 28 and 29 November 2019, the NATO Defense College (NDC) Academic Advisory Board convened its 49th annual meeting at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The AAB aims to advise the Commandant on ways in which to improve the academic, research and outreach activities of the College, to enhance links with NATO HQ and Allied Command Transformation, and to ensure that NDC outreach strategies contribute to those of the Alliance.
In his role of Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach chairs the NATO Defense College Academic Advisory Board (AAB) which plays a fundamental role in support of the NDC’s commitments: it reviews present and future academic programmes, appraises College activities, and ensures that the educational process is ready for the challenges facing the Alliance today and in the future.
The meeting was officially opened by Sir Stuart and the Commandant of the NDC, Lieutenant General Chris Whitecross who co-chaired the two-day meeting at NATO HQ.
The Board received an update from the NDC Research Division which provides NATO’s senior leaders with sound and timely analyses and recommendations on current issues of particular concern for the Alliance. “The NDC plays an important role in communicating the real value of NATO and building support with key audiences. You translate NATO’s work into something relevant for the next generation”, underlined the Chairman.
Sir Stuart also pointed out the significant role the NDC plays in the education of the future leaders of NATO and highlighted the excellent work the NDC is doing in this field. The Chairmn added that “the NDC is not only central to educating NATO staff members and future leaders but also Partner Nations. All in all, over 60 nations are able to attend the courses. This international setting not only allows participants to learn from each other and encourages personal growth. Military officers and civilians return to their Nations better able to conduct NATO and national missions and activities”.
