On 20 November, the NATO Defense College (NDC) Senior Course participated for the first time in the Multi-Dimension Deterrence Strategy (MDDS) Exercise, an innovative, computer/AI-assisted simulation exercise designed to challenge the ability of participants to develop strategies for multi-domain deterrence.
The scenario of this first iteration of the MDDS opposed two teams, NATO and Russia, within each Senior Course Committee. Course Members were each assigned to one of five critical dimensions: Joint (kinetic military capabilities), Space, Cyber, Cognitive and Economy. Their objective was to maximize deterrence by strategically investing in their own capabilities while undermining the opponent’s. Participants had to analyse the complex interplay between these domains, assess available resources and develop coordinated strategies to achieve their goals.
Centring around the theme of NATO-Russia relations, the MDDS exercise aligned with the objectives of the curriculum and was organized immediately following the Russia Seminar. Running from 18 to 20 November, this Seminar provided Course Members with in-depth insights into Russia’s capabilities, ambitions and policies, along with the impact of its aggressive actions on Euro-Atlantic security.
Throughout the simulation, participants had the opportunity to consult with subject-matter experts, who provided real-time guidance and insights. Experts included Mr Gordon Campbell (European Space Agency), Mr Hervé Le Guyader (NATO Science and Technology Organization), Prof. Max Kilger (University of Texas System), Prof. Monica Auteri (Roma Tre University), and Prof. Atin Basuchoudhary (Virginia Military Institute).
The MDDS exercise offers an innovative approach to strategic thinking and decision-making, and represents a significant milestone in the College’s commitment to providing cutting-edge education and training. By leveraging advanced technology and engaging with experts in war-gaming and multi-domain operations, the NDC is preparing future leaders to tackle the complex security challenges of today and tomorrow, and to rely on forward-looking tools.
