Organized by the NATO Defense College’s Research Division, the debate provided an excellent opportunity for experts to discuss whether NATO and Russian relations are on a set trajectory or not. Might change be possible? The purpose of the event was to have open and creative exchanges on developments in Russia, the implications for Russia’s foreign relations and to identify what issues might be on the horizon.
Sixteen participants from twelve NATO and partner countries were welcomed by Dr Thierry Tardy (FRA), Director of the NDC’s Research Division, and by Dr Marc Ozawa (USA), Researcher at the NDC. The workshop consisted of three different panels: the first session covered current developments, while the second and third examined the impact of history on today’s Russia, with a discussion on looking ahead to the future. Dr Vira Ratsiborynska (UKR), NDC Visiting Scholar, gave a presentation on the history and challenges of relations with Eastern countries from the NATO Partnership for Peace programme. The deliverables of the event were, to help identify and inform future Russia-related research agendas; to produce a NDC Policy Brief on NATO-Russia relations.
The final aim was to help form a network of Russia scholars and analysts for future partnerships and collaborations.
