On 15th November, participants attending the eighth NATO Regional Cooperation Course (NRCC 8) at the NATO Defense College (NDC) visited the Great Synagogue of Rome: this historic place of worship is situated close to the left bank of the Tiber, overlooking the former ghetto.
The visit afforded Course Members a rare opportunity to appreciate the distinctive architecture of the building, which dates back to the early 20th century, and the artistic heritage housed within.
A guided tour of the adjoining museum gave Course Members detailed insight into the history of the Jewish community in Rome. They were also introduced to the traditional Jewish calendar, which regulates daily religious practice and seasonal festivities.
The whole visit was conducted with the kind assistance provided by Ms Amira Oron, who is a NRCC 8 Course Member from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Visits to the homes of different religious communities are an integral part of the NRCC syllabus: since Course Members are from very diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, an important benefit they derive from the Course is enhanced knowledge of the beliefs and traditions associated with creeds other than their own: this helps foster mutual understanding and respect, which are the true basis for communication and cooperation.
