Modular Short Course (MSC) 134-2, held at the NATO Defense College from 11-15 March 2019, offered 19 senior officers and officials from 13 NATO countries a strategic-level perspective on international organizations.
Run in conjunction with Study Period B of Senior Course 134, the MSC examined the international security framework within which NATO operates, focusing on the key international organizations and non-state actors involved. The concept of the “Comprehensive Approach”, combining political, civilian and military instruments in the interests of peace, security and stability, was discussed at length.
On Monday morning, attendees were welcomed in the Maynard-Thorn Auditorium by NDC Commandant LGEN Chris Whitecross, who introduced the day’s lectures on “Regional Organizations and their impact on global security. The OSCE and ASEAN”.
Lectures during the rest of the week were as follows: “The European Union: Roles and Institutions”, by Prof. Van Ham (NLD); “The European Union Common Security and Defence Policy – EU-NATO Cooperation”; “The United Nations and the International Courts”, by Prof. Berdal (NOR) and Prof. Bartolini (ITA)”; “Civil Society. The Evolving Role of Sub- and Non-State Actors. ICRC Case Study”, by Prof. Marchetti (ITA) , Dr Berti (NATO) and Mr Fuellemann (CHE).
On Friday 15 March, a graduation ceremony concluded the course.
