As part of the Summer Field Studies on “European Perspectives”, Senior Course 114 has been briefed, at the NATO Defense College, by Italian Representatives on the occasion of the Italian National Day.
The first lecturer was Major General Pasquale PREZIOSA, Chief of the 3rd Department, Military Policy and Planning, who gave a presentation on “Defence: Policy, Priorities and Operations”, covering the international scenario and Italian Missions. He underlined the value of the comprehensive approach as a response to the new Transnational challenges. Touching on the Italian operations he emphasized the importance of transformation that is the real key of success, coherent with the transformation of NATO and EU.
Dr. Salvatore GUGLIELMINO, Director of the Office for Coordination and Planning of Police Forces, International Relations Service of the Ministry of Interior, lectured on “International Security (Policies and Priorities)” and underlined the importance of international police cooperation. During his presentation he outlined the three different channels of Police Cooperation Service: INTERPOL, EUROPOL and S.LRE.N.E. that are the major pillars of the internationalization of the Italian Police.
The last speaker was Counsellor Carlo BATORI, NATO and Military Office of the Directorate for Multilateral and Political Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He presented the three main pillars of Italian Foreign Policy that are always oriented to a multilateral approach: EU, UN, NATO, explaining the relationships between these three institutions and Italy. He also spoke about areas that are priorities for Italy:
- the Western Balkans which can offer great economic opportunities;
- the Middle East, especially Iraq and Afghanistan where Italy has a considerable military and civilian presence and fully supports the opportunity to create a political, military and civilian comprehensive approach; and Iran, where Italy believes that Teheran could cooperate in the mission in Afghanistan.
Apart from the academic lectures, the Italian Senior Course Member Col. Domenico FANELLI briefly covered the history of Italy, in particular the recent celebration of the 63rd Anniversary of the Foundation of the Italian Republic on 2nd June.
